Turk, D.C. & Rudy, T.E. (1986). Assessment of cognitive factors in chronic pain: A worthwhile enterprise? Journal of Clinical and Consulting Psychology, 54, 760-768.  Obviously the authors conclude that it is indeed a worthwhile enterprise.  They provide a good summary of the empirical support for this conclusion.

Miller, W.R. & Rollnick, S. (2012). Motivational Interviewing: Preparing People to Change Addictive Behavior, Third Edition. New York: Guilford.  Lack of motivation for change can be a major problem. This volume presents a practical approach to generating motivation for change which has been supported by extensive research.  While the book focuses on substance abuse, the same approach is applicable with a broad range of other changes.

Substance Abuse

The National Institute on Drug Abuse has published "Principles of Drug Addiction Treatment: A Research-Based Guide." This excellent resource for physicians and mental health professionals is available free on the Web from NIDA's website ( http://www.nida.nih.gov ) or by calling 1-800-729-6686.
