Locating Behavioral Health Referrals

It is to your advantage, and to your patients’ advantage, if you maintain relationships with behavioral health professionals who you know and trust.

Many state and local psychological associations offer referral services that can recommend licensed psychologists in your area. If you have difficulty locating the telephone number of your state psychological association, call the American Psychological Association’s Practice Directorate at 202-336-5800 and they can give you the name and telephone number of your state psychological association.

A number of on-line directories can help you locate mental health professionals in your area. Try the following:

• The Association for Advancement of Behavior Therapy maintains an international directory and, while not all AABT members provide Behavioral Health services, many of them do. AABT’s directory can be accessed on-line at http://www.aabt.org or by phone at (212) 647-1890

Ideally, you will get more that one lead. Call the therapists who sound promising and find out about their licensure and level of training, their approach to therapy, their experience in working with the problems that come up frequently in your practice, and their fees and location. It is important to choose someone who you think you can work with and who you think can help your patients.
