What is “Behavioral Health” and Why should I Care?

In the past, mental health care and substance abuse treatment were separate fields. In the old days, many psychotherapists knew little about substance abuse, many drug and alcohol counselors knew little about psychotherapy, and neither group knew much about business and industry.

“Behavioral Health” is a term that has recently been coined to encompass both mental health and substance abuse services. Behavioral health services are most commonly provided by Psychologists, Psychiatrists, Social Workers, Counselors. In business settings, these services are sometimes provided by Employee Assistance Programs and sometimes by consultants.
